The Naples area has been ranked among the nation’s Top 20 metro for economic development by The Milken Institute. In a report released this month, the Naples area was among six Florida communities to rank among the top 25, in fact, Florida figured more prominently than any other state. The Milken Institute has compiled these rankings annually since 1999, taking into account economic factors that include job growth, wage growth, and high-tech GDP.

The Naples area has factored in the top 20 of the rankings for the last three years in a row. Naples is credited for boasting the third highest job growth number of any metro area between 2015 and 2016. The report also praised Naples’ strong tourism and retail sectors, yet pointed out that this can be a double-edged sword due to both industries being particularly vulnerable to business cycles as well as natural disasters. Minoli Ratnatunga, who co-authored the report, said the small but fast-growing tech sector in Naples may be a way to diversify the economy down the road, but that tourism and retail would continue to be a major driver for the near  future. The healthcare industry in Naples was also singled out as a strong economic driver as employers like Arthrex and Naples Community Hospital supply more than 5,500 jobs to the area.
